What our people say about us

Dave Simms, Assistant Depot Supervisor

My role at the depot involves taking calls and orders from customers, stock management to ensure we have the right products/quantities in at the correct time and liaising with our agronomists and colleagues from other depots to ensure this happens. At busy times, I will also pick driver’s orders to keep a quick turnaround. It’s very varied but this has allowed me to get to know a lot of the people within the business, which has been great.

Why Hutchinsons?

The words that come to mind are integrity and loyalty. I am a local chap and have known some of our customers my whole life. Others have been customers for a large proportion of my working life, and I get to see them socially as well as through the business. I have found that with Hutchinsons comes integrity. Our agronomists don’t try and sell you unwanted or unneeded products and when we offer one of our services, Omnia or TerraMap for example, it’s because it will be of genuine benefit to the customer’s business. To me, that means more than anything. The loyalty is as much with the staff as with the customers, with a number of long serving staff. Customers are never just an account number. They are a name and a face and long may this continue.

Emma Roughton, Commercial Account Manager

My job comprises of several different roles. My primary role is as the Hutchinsons account manager for the AF Group. This involves the day-to-day management of the crop protection orders for AF’s members, from order to delivery on to farm. I work closely with AF’s crop protection team, our commercial team and our depot supervisors to ensure we provide an excellent service to the group members. I also manage the Conviso sugar beet sales campaign, which involves managing the ever-increasing orders and ensuring they are delivered on farm in good time. I also work with our Agronomy teams to support and increase sales of fertiliser and seed.

Why Hutchinsons?

The best thing about Hutchinsons is the people and they are what makes the difference! Hutchinsons is a hardworking team, passionate about the industry and always working towards the next challenge.

Chris Blashill, Digital Services Specialist

In my role I provide consultancy around digital agronomy, helping the grower to understand and interpret their data to make practical decisions on farm. For example, I offer my growers tools to be able to target nutrition, maximise the return on their investment in fertiliser and use GPS hardware to support placement of said fertilisers. By doing so we are managing to target our applications, reduce certain risks throughout the growing calendar whilst also stepping away from the yield plateau most farmers have been experiencing. I love being able to provide a solution for farmers to streamline their reporting and data input, mainly for crop assurance, red tractor audits and for better farm practice.

Why Hutchinsons?

Having worked for a competitor for around 10 years, I had kept a keen eye on Hutchinsons developments. The Omnia platform has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, providing more than just precision farming tools. The level of investment into development has seen the introduction of multiple new modules to add value to any farming business, including the cost of production, SFI administration, and full nutrient management planning tools.

Tom Whitfield, Area Business Manager and Agronomist

My role involves managing a great team of agronomists in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, as well as my own agronomy business with growers across the Northeast. I am a member of the Northern management team which creates the aims and trajectory for the region. As a member of the Northern management team, I am also responsible for recruitment, working alongside our recruitment and Foundation management team.

Why Hutchinsons

Hutchinsons is a company full of opportunities for anyone interested in working in distribution, agricultural advice and services. It is a hard-working business striving to do the best for our farmer customers. I enjoy the technical focus Hutchinsons takes to make good decisions for the long-term sustainability of farm businesses. I have had the opportunity to work across several agronomy teams in the Northern business and, in doing so, worked with a great range of agronomists and farmers. I now work with many varying farm businesses from pure arable enterprises to dairy, pigs and mixed units, which I really enjoy.
