NFU harvest survey aims to assess impact of difficult season

Arable farmers across England and Wales are encouraged to take part in this year’s NFU harvest survey which aims to build a detailed database of yields across the country.

NFU Combinable Crops Board vice-chairman James Cox explains data will be particularly important to assess the impact of escalating input costs, market volatility, and difficult weather this season.

The NFU would like to hear from as many growers from different regions as possible in order to collate yield data variations across the country and tailor advice when liaising with MPs and industry officials.

“I’m conscious many of you will have already filled in surveys for the NFU this year, and I thank you for taking the time to do so,” he says.

“These surveys help to shape and provide evidence for our policy asks and help us to champion the cause of British arable farming.”

The survey will only take a few minutes to complete, and should be undertaken once growers have completed harvest to maximise yield accuracy.

If harvest is not complete by the 1 October survey deadline, please provide the average harvested yield to date.

Yield estimates should be based on dried samples. If this is not possible, please adjust to give your best estimate of yield on a 14.5% moisture content basis for cereals, 9% for oilseeds and 16% for proteins.

All figures must be provided in metric units (t/ha) and areas planted should be recorded the same areas as the June Census return.

The survey will close on Sunday 1 October 2023.
